Niklas Backstrom went 3-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in three appearances last week and for his efforts has been named the NHL’s third star of the week. It’s the fourth time in his career that he has attained one of the three-star awards.Backstrom made 20 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory against the Calgary Flames Feb. 26 and another 25 stops in a 4-3 win at the Phoenix Coyotes Feb. 28. Backstrom then made 19 saves in a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers March 3. With the win, he improved to 17-0-0 in 17 career home games against the Oilers, the second-longest home winning streak against one team by any goaltender in NHL history. In 16 games this season, Backstrom is 9-5-2 with a 2.21 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. In 343 career NHL appearances, all with the Wild, the Helsinki, Finland, native has a 169-114-44 record with a 2.41 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and 26 shutouts.
