I’ve been a proponent of the Brett Favre to the Vikings experiment since the drama started last year, but I didn’t completely embrace the former Packer until yesterday. By beating his former team in Lambeau, he truly became a Viking as strange as that sounds.
Collecting sports cards is one of those childhood habits I’ve never quite outgrown. I’ve limited and focused my collection over the years and now exclusively collect Topps cards. The beauty of cards is they provide a snapshot in time completely uncorrupted by future events.
Feeling nostalgic last night, I pulled out my Brett Favre collection. I especially enjoyed the choppy, cheesy blurbs written below the stats on the back….
1993: Overnight sensation who went from being a Falcon backup to a Packer Pro-Bowler. Started final 13 games of ‘92. Ranked No. 2 in NFC in completion percentage. Exudes quiet confidence.
1996: Doing his best Bart Star imitation, Brett earned league MVP honors in ‘95 en route to guiding Green Bay to the NFC title game. His NFL-leading 38 TD passes were third-highest total in league history. Favre’s 4,413 passing yards paced NFL, while his 99.5 passer rating topped NFC.
1998: If Brett’s place in history was still in doubt before last season, it is no longer. The Packer QB shared league MVP honors with Detroit RB Barry Sanders, the third straight season he has won the award. No other player in NFL history has been MVP more than twice.
1999: How many players can legitimately claim to have Hall of Fame numbers before their 30th birthday? Brett is in that select group. A three-time MVP, he is the only QB in history with five seasons of 30 or more TDs.
2000: For all the talk about Brett’s touchdown passes and streak of 3,000-yard passing seasons, one accomplishment has been overlooked: he has started 125 consecutive games, which is the longest streak for any quarterback since the NFL merger in 1970.
2005-2008: Favre’s statistics fill up the back of the card leaving no space for a write-up.
